Introducing the Ridge Rebels: Our Women's Trail Running Shoes

Just a couple of weeks ago, we introduced the Monterra waterproof hiking boot. The response was incredible. It validated everything we have believed since we started making sport sandals: you want outdoor footwear that prioritizes comfort from the first step. You want gear that works with your foot, rather than forcing your foot to break in the gear.

But we knew the Monterra was only half of the equation. While a supportive, mid-height boot is perfect for wet conditions and carrying heavier packs, many of you asked for something different for your fast-paced days. You wanted something lighter. Something breathable. Something that feels like your favorite gym sneaker but grips the dirt securely.

Today, we are thrilled to answer that request. Meet the Ridge Rebels, our new womens trail running shoes.

The Shift Toward Lighter Footwear

For a long time, the outdoor industry pushed a single narrative. If you were stepping off the pavement, you supposedly needed stiff, heavy leather boots. You were told to buy heavy wool socks and prepare for weeks of blisters before your footwear became comfortable.

The way we explore has changed. We know that many of our customers are fitting their miles in between work, family, and travel. You might be logging a quick three miles on a local nature path, or tackling a dusty day hike on vacation.

In these scenarios, traditional womens hiking shoes can sometimes feel like overkill. They add unnecessary weight to your stride. Research and our own testing show that lifting a heavy shoe thousands of times over a few miles leads to early leg fatigue. When we tested early prototypes of the Ridge Rebels on the rocky switchbacks of the Green Mountains, we realized that saving just a few ounces per foot completely changed our energy levels by mile four.

That is exactly why lightweight trail shoes for women have become so popular. They offer a hybrid solution. You get the agility and speed of a running sneaker, combined with the traction and toe protection of a dedicated outdoor shoe.

Why Trail Runners Make Great Day Hikers

You might be wondering if you have to be a competitive athlete to wear these. The answer is absolutely no. While the Ridge Rebels are engineered to handle the dynamic movements of running, they are also exceptionally comfortable trail runners for day hikes.

When you compare trail runners vs hiking shoes, the biggest difference lies in flexibility and breathability. Boots provide stiff structure, which is vital when you are carrying a heavy backpacking pack. However, if you are just carrying a water bottle and some snacks, your feet benefit more from natural movement. The Ridge Rebels flex with your foot. This allows your arches and toes to function the way they were meant to, adapting to uneven roots and rocks smoothly.

We spent weeks debating lug depth (the rubber grips on the bottom of the shoe). We ran our prototypes through slick morning mud and dry, dusty hardpack to find the perfect balance. We wanted lugs that bite into loose dirt, but are not so long that they feel awkward if you have to walk on a paved path to reach the trailhead. The result is a highly versatile outsole that gives you confidence on mixed terrain.

Another massive benefit of choosing a trail runner is packability. When you are packing for a weekend getaway or a flight to a national park, fitting bulky boots into a carry-on is a nightmare. The flexible nature of the Ridge Rebels means they squash down easily in your luggage. They are versatile enough to wear through the airport, straight to the trailhead, and out to dinner afterward.

Built From Your Feedback

Just like our sandal line, the development of the Ridge Rebels started with listening. We read your emails. We looked at the photos you tagged us in. We noticed how many of you were wearing our sandals on surprisingly technical trails because you simply could not find closed-toe shoes that did not pinch or cause blisters.

We heard the frustrations loud and clear. You hated cramped toe boxes that bruised your toes on downhill slopes. You disliked stiff materials that required a month of wear before they felt decent. Many of you shared stories of taking your heavy boots off halfway through a hike just to give your feet a break.

Internally, our goal was simple: create agile hiking shoes for women that feel like an extension of your body. We left out the bulky, rigid plastic cages found on heavily technical alpine footwear. Instead, we focused on breathable off-road running shoes that wrap the foot securely without restricting it.

The Anatomy of the Ridge Rebels

What exactly makes the Ridge Rebels different? We focused on three core pillars: cushioning, traction, and fit.

  • Targeted Cushioning: We utilized a high-rebound EVA foam for the midsole. This cushioned midsole for trail running absorbs the harsh impact of rocks and hard-packed dirt. During our fit trials, we handed out samples to a group of women who normally wear heavy boots. Watching them lace up the Rebels and immediately bounce on their toes told us we nailed the foam density. It is soft enough to forgive a heavy heel strike, but responsive enough to keep you moving forward.
  • Breathable Mesh Upper: Hot, trapped feet on a summer hike can ruin your afternoon. The Ridge Rebels feature a highly breathable mesh upper that promotes constant airflow. If you happen to splash through a shallow stream, the lightweight materials dry out quickly as you keep moving.
  • Strategic Traction: The rubber outsoles feature multi-directional lugs. They provide forward grip for uphill climbs and braking power for downhill descents. You will feel grounded and secure, experiencing excellent grip and traction on loose dirt without feeling weighed down.

Fit, Sizing, and First-Wear Comfort

Because we designed these for immediate comfort, there is virtually no break-in period. You can take them out of the box and head straight to the trail.

When it comes to sizing, the Ridge Rebels run true to size. They feature a naturally roomy toe box. This is a critical design choice for outdoor footwear for walking on dirt trails. As you hike or run, your feet naturally swell. A natural toe box allows your toes to splay out for better balance and prevents painful friction on the sides of your feet.

If you are going through the transition from road running to trail running, we recommend pairing the Rebels with a medium-cushion, moisture-wicking sock. Merino wool or synthetic blends work best. Avoid cotton, as it traps sweat and causes blisters. If you prefer very thick hiking socks, you might consider sizing up by a half size to accommodate the extra volume.

Lacing also plays a big role in your comfort. If you are tackling a steep downhill section and feel your toes sliding forward, try utilizing the extra lace hole at the top of the shoe (often called a heel lock or runner's loop). This technique secures your heel firmly in the back of the shoe, keeping your toes from hitting the front of the roomy toe box.

Care and Maintenance for Your Trail Runners

Taking care of your Ridge Rebels will help them last through countless adventures. Unlike our waterproof Monterra boots, these are designed to breathe, which means they will eventually get dusty or muddy.

When they get dirty, simply let the mud dry completely. Then, clap the shoes together to knock off the loose dirt. Use a soft brush (an old toothbrush works great) to clean the mesh. If they need a deeper clean, remove the insoles and wash the shoes by hand with mild soap and cold water. Never put them in the washing machine or dryer. High heat can warp the foam midsole and degrade the rubber outsole.

When drying your shoes after a wash or a rainy hike, keep them out of direct sunlight. Leaving them on a hot porch or near a campfire can cause the materials to shrink and the glue to weaken. Instead, stuff them with newspaper and leave them in a well-ventilated, shaded area. This simple habit will significantly extend the life of your flexible shoes for mixed terrain.
